My name is dibau naum h. I live in a nation called Israel, and am a member of the Jewish ethnic group. This organism I’m part of is in a conflict with another nation, on the same land, the Palestinians. It’s real F****** S*** to be in this conflict, & as my nation is currently the stronger side, its much more F**** F**** S**** for the cells in the other side. Execuse my language, but it’s just like that. & also excuse me for being obscure, I simple can’t avoid thinking of humans as cells in a super-organism, which is the real evident creature.

The smaller super-organism in which I’m currently residing is an harbor city called Ashdod, inhabited mainly by immigrants from north africa, russia & france, in southern Israel. I moved here a few years ago, because my wife, an immigrant from ukraine, grew up here. 60 years ago, before all the large roads, malls, & beautiful buildings of this city were built, 1 or 2 small Palestinian villages existed here. There’s almost no trait of them. You can see their markings in Google Earth.

When Israel was formed, all neighbouring arab nations started war & the Egyptian army arrived until where Ashdod is located (a nice egyptian obelisk marks the location, in memory of the egyptian soldiers). I believe it was around that time that the Palestinians that lived were were forced our of here, or maybe they fled away by themselves. I wish I knew more about it. I wish I knew people whose families lived here.

You’re asking why do I live here, when these people live as refugees in other countries? My family also arrived to Israel when the nation was formed as refugees, from Europe. They were very wealthy & successul, & had a factory & many appartments all over europre, but lost all of their family (each grand parent lost his/her parents, partners & children!) & possessions in the holocaust, & arrived as refugees to Israel, when it was under british rule.

I’m not going to conclude, just to express my wish to both Palestinans & Israelies could live as 2 nations side by side, in peace, & share this place, which is the only place we’ve got. Currently there are so many Israelies and Palestinians tried to destroy the possibility of this, that this goal seem so far away. I decided to write a documentary on these Israelies and Palestinians trying to prevent co-existence & peace, & maybe convince some of them to cease their efforts.

2 days ago was the Jewish Passover diner, in which jews tell the their children the story of fleding from egypt, in which they were slaves, to Israel. It’s a nice dinner, with strange rituals, & it was fun. We hosted a guy, who lost his parents, & was very happy to join us. I heard him tell a story from his military service in the last couple of weeks, in the occupied teritories, near the city of Nablus. He just mentioned briefly all the terrorist incidents he had to handle, including for example 2 women suicide bombers, but went into details on 1 incident.

He needed to guard some school of Jewish settlers near Nablus, a religious school for girls. He then noticed 2 settler girls striding, in a walk thru a Palestinian village. The soldiers decided to escort them, to protect them. The 2 girls, feeling secured, didn’t stop insulting, swearing & trying to hurt the local villagers, which as the man said “wanted to eat them up”. This behavior is so typical of the jewish settlers in the occupied territories. Here’s a short movie I just got by email:

  2. Snip Six-pack rings – birds & fishes suffocate to death, as it’s invisible under water
  3. Use a clean detergent – phosphates in detergents are killing lakes & streams.
  4. Aerate your faucets – faucet aerators reduce 50% of the water usage.
  5. New ingredients – the color used to bleach paper towels & coffee filters creates dioxin, a deadly toxic
  6. Tanks, but no tanks – turn your water heater few degrees less, to save several percents of electricity
  7. Make a phone call – a dialog with the ppl behind the relevant authorities, can make a difference
  8. Brush up on paint – use latex paint instead of oil-based paint, to reduce toxic & heavy metal pollution
  9. Time to re-tire? – buy long lasting tires & preserve their life, as their environment impact is quite bad
  10. Home on the range – many small things you can do to reduce electricity consumption with your home appliances
  11. Don’t go with the flow – don’t leave the water running when brushing your teeth
  12. Gas station ecology – choose environment friendly gas for your car (more options today, & more awaiting)
  13. The twilight ozone – be careful from A/C leaks & CFC sprays & fire extinguishers
  14. Your gas is as good as mine – use less gas (or just get an hybrid car!)
  15. Recharge your batteries – less toxic waste, & be sure not to dump batteries
  16. Attention shoppers? – use less bags, paper or plastic, & reuse them more

  49. Stay involved – keep improving in your fight to save the earth
  50. Spread the word – write about it in your own blog

Of course it’s the Graffiti Research Lab’s Laser TAG.

The video above is of a large setup. The current state-of-the-art setup is much smaller (on a 3-wheels bike). Took this shot in the last Ars Electronica:

Can’t wait to build it, & early adopting this popular device every prick gonna carry in 2010…

Thanks for innovating, GRL!

I went last friday to a demonstration in the village of Bil’in, in the occupied territories (Palestine/Israel). It was supposed to be a peaceful demonstration, but instead got violent, & I got injured.

Demonstration in Bil’in - setup

We were protesting the taking of the village lands, that got separated from it by the Israeli built wall (“the fence”), in order to allow the growth of near by israeli settlements. You need to have a Palestinian soul to understand the meaning of those hills with olive trees – it’s something beyond the importance of life/family/society/heritage. For them these trees are like their roots.

Palestinian watching the wall & lands beyond it

I thought it will be a peaceful demonstration, with its palestinian organizer, Abdallah, sitting on the fence, just next to the soldiers telling the many protesters the slogans to shout, & being accompanied by the rhythmic music the demonstrators produced.

There were also the Anarchists that tried to bypass the fence, & get to the olive trees beyond it, without much luck (the soldiers shot them with stun grenades & tear gas).

Anarchists trying to bypass the wall

Then some young palestinians started throwing stones, to which the israeli soldiers responding by shooting stun grenades, tear gas & rubber/iron bullets at all of us, while we were running away back to the village.

I managed to get a stun grenade straight on my face, while fleeing back. It deeply cut my upper lip, & also left a cut above the eye. The palestinians were very friendly & helpful, & I got evacuated to an hospital to stitch wound.

When will this all end?

in light of the recent (past ~100 hours/days/monthes/years, all the same) events in my organism (jewish ethnic group of the israeli nation), I want to ask a small question: how can a cell make a change?

Those recent events include violent conflicts with neighboring organisms (Palestinians, Lebanese) in an endless vicious circle, with no real progress in solving it’s root causes. These violent conflicts include terrorist attacks on soldiers, followed by bombings of these terrorists taking the lives of children &/ their parents.

Normally, a cell has limited effect, as his micro behavior & choices are just aggregated along with those of millions of other cells, creating a statistical emergence of macro behaviors & trends.

Though, there seems to be exceptions, in which a small action brings a huge (normally very negative) snow-ball effect, e.g., an assasination of a king, or taking over airplanes using simple knives & flying them into buildings.

But normally, cells make changes only by small & steady growing effect on their neighboring cells, e.g., a pacifict attorney convincing people to non-violently fight for their emancipation.

As the macro behavior emerges from the communication & interactions between the cells, you might expect that changes in the messaging medium of the interactions may effect the emergence, & its speed. Do super human organisms, using mass media & Internet communications change their macro behavior faster as a result of cells micro behavior changes?

Maybe the influence is always similar in pattern: a cell’s micro behavior change may have some influence on his neighboring cells, which may recursively distribute it further, climbing a gaussian curve of adoption, depending on the power/value of the change, until it passes or not the line between micro & macro behavior.

This mechanism of change propagation happens in the mechanism of memes, which spread in the population, as a function of their value/survival power, & their success in propagation through communication.

In my super organism, it was a small meme held by very few cells that the conflicts with neighboring organisms are the results of root causes, which drive the conflicts & fuel it. For example, the meme of proffessor Yishayahu Leibovitch claiming in 1967 that the Israeli occupation is bad & must end, took almost 40 years until it has spread & held even by the politician leaders.

But, alas, it seems like it will take many more years, & many more tragedies, until the macro behavior of middle east organisms will change & adopt the intelligent powerful peaceful coexistence behavior, as adopted in other areas of the world, located somewhere else in the memetic evolution.

So, how can a cell make/accelerate a macro change? In the past, people that made such changes were assumed to have super-natural powers, such as Jesus & Jeanne D’Arc. Does the magic of new technology endows individual cells with super-natural powers?

I was thinking of several directions, such as:

  • Execute memetic “terrorist” actions, that will effect people by non-violent art (social sculptures), toward the memes of peaceful coexistence, & compassion toward different organisms’ cells.
  • Use social technologies, that group many cells & providing them more macro power.

The effectiveness of such directions needs to be assessed, & then be used as fast as possible, because every day that passes, so many people are being so much hurt.

“The law of God, is the law of change.” (G. B. Shaw)

I was lucky to see today an exhibition of this great artist, providing magnificent visualization of emergence, using projected video of many humans, seen as an higher level phenomena.

Rovner petri dish

After the exhibition, in the Tel Aviv museum of Art, I passed by a demonstration against the keeling in Lebanon & Israel. It was an unusual voice, coming out of people deviating from the super-organism of Israeli society, which is quite united behind the massive attacks on the Iranian-backed pro-Palestinian Hizbolla. One must have a quite topsight vision to see beyond the eyes of his tribe & feel for the people in another one, with which it is in a war. Though obviously those other people are quite not to be blamed for the war inflicted upon them due to the terrorist activities done by a group backed by another country. It’s really sad that this area knows only the language of violance, & the poor people that just want to live their lives have to die or suffer. It’s only slightly re-assuring to see people saying that it’s wrong, & I’m quite admiring their vision & courage to say it.
